Executive Chairman of the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS), Mr. Jim Pam Wayas, has announced that the service is prepared to surpass the ₦69.5 billion revenue target allocated to it by the state government in the 2026 budget. He stressed that the service has banned the collection of revenue in cash.
Mr. Wayas made this disclosure on Monday during a press conference held at the PSIRS Secretariat in Jos, Plateau State. He stated that the service has been diligently carrying out its duties, although some tax defaulters have been evading tax payments. According to him, such defaulters have been taken to court to face the law.
Mr. Wayas revealed that one particular tax defaulter’s case has progressed to the Supreme Court, adding that PSIRS has remained fair and transparent in its dealings with taxpayers. He further explained that under his leadership as the chief revenue collector, cases of double taxation have been minimized.
Speaking on revenue leakages, the PSIRS Executive Chairman said that the system has been fully digitalized under his watch, and cash collection of revenue has been abolished to curb leakages. However, he revealed that some union officials who collect daily revenue from tricycle operators and other vendors often attempt to outsmart the government by diverting a significant portion of the funds. He warned that such practices must stop immediately.
Commenting generally on revenue generation, Mr. Wayas noted that the state has recorded significant improvement in revenue collection from 2023 to date compared to previous administrations. On revenue from mining activities, he explained that the government has not been able to receive its full expected share due to illegal mining activities across the state.
The Plateau State chief revenue collector appealed to citizens to promptly pay their taxes as and when due, stressing that this would enable the government to develop the state for the benefit of all. The press briefing by the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service is a quarterly event aimed at keeping citizens informed about the agency’s activities in line with democratic governance .
