.…Says media plays vital role in Benue’s development

The Special Adviser to the Governor of Benue State on Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Hon. Fidelis Unongo, has revealed the state’s plans to boost its economy and empower youths through various initiatives.

Unongo disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) House  in Makurdi, highlighting key programmes spearheaded by Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.

These initiatives include the Benue Fashion Hub Programme, aimed at creating over 50,000 jobs annually, and the Mastercard Foundation Business Development Programme, which has empowered over 2,000 women in enterprise and entrepreneurship.

Others are the National Agricultural and Mechanization Summit, aimed at transforming agriculture in the state, and the installation of a 300kVA solar power plant at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) to provide sustainable electricity.

Unongo emphasized the crucial role of the media in driving development, urging journalists to partner with the government to showcase results and tell the stories of ordinary citizens whose lives are being transformed.

He expressed confidence that the initiatives would transform Benue State, citing Governor Alia’s vision for development and commitment to empowering youths and women.

The Special Adviser praised the media for its crucial role in driving development in the state, highlighting the importance of a free and vibrant press in promoting good governance and accountability.

He acknowledged the risks journalists take to report the truth and assured the media that the Benue State Government values their contributions.

“The media is not just an observer, but a partner in development,” Unongo said, urging journalists to continue holding the government accountable and showcasing the state’s progress.

He expressed confidence that with the media’s continued support, the state would achieve significant development and prosperity.

Unongo also reflected on his late father, Wantergh Paul I. Unongo, a renowned politician and statesman, whose legacy continues to inspire him in his service to the state.
