The Niger State Police Command has commenced investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners who reportedly died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Niger State Command.
The investigation follows an incident on Thursday, September 17, 2026, in which several persons arrested on suspicion of illegal mining were reportedly found dead at the NSCDC detention facility.
The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, mnips, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna, to take charge of the investigation and establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The Police Command has appealed to family members, relatives and members of the public with credible information that could assist the investigation to come forward to the SCID, Minna, and provide such information.
The Commissioner urged residents and acquaintances of the deceased to remain calm, law-abiding and cooperate with the investigation, assuring the public that the Command would thoroughly investigate the incident.
He further reaffirmed the commitment of the Police Command to upholding human rights and ensuring accountability in the discharge of its statutory responsibilities.
