The Benue State University Teaching Hospital, BSUTH, Makurdi, will mark the third anniversary of Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande as Chief Medical Director October, 2026, with its first-ever Anniversary Awards and Dinner.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Head of Public Relations and Protocol, BSUTH, Tsenzughul Moses, said a Central Planning Committee has been constituted and inaugurated to coordinate activities for the celebration. The committee is chaired by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Terkura Michael Agbir.
According to the statement, the event will celebrate three years of institutional development, innovation, professional commitment, service expansion and renewed visibility at the hospital. It will also recognize staff, partners and stakeholders who have contributed to BSUTH’s progress.
“The planned Awards and Dinner Night is historic, being the first of its kind since the hospital’s inception. Beyond celebration, it is designed to promote a culture of excellence by recognising dedication, professionalism, innovation, teamwork and outstanding contributions to healthcare delivery,” the statement read.
The hospital noted that under Dr. Hwande’s leadership, BSUTH has strengthened its specialist services and diagnostic capacity, positioning it as a key tertiary healthcare and referral centre for Benue State and neighbouring communities.
A major highlight, the statement said, is the unveiling of an advanced robotic molecular laboratory. The facility reflects the hospital’s growing emphasis on modern technology and faster diagnostic services aimed at improving clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.
BSUTH has also expanded services in surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics, radiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, among others, in line with its mandate of providing quality tertiary healthcare while supporting teaching, training and research.
The statement stressed that institutional progress cannot be separated from the people driving healthcare delivery.
“Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, technicians, administrators and other staff remain central to the hospital’s achievements. The Awards and Dinner Night offers an opportunity to place human capital at the centre of the BSUTH story, strengthen staff morale and establish a tradition of appreciating excellence and service,” it added.
The anniversary, according to management, will also provide an opportunity for reflection on improvements achieved, challenges overcome, and the institution’s readiness for the next phase of development.
BSUTH acknowledged the support of the Benue State Government under Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia in advancing healthcare development in the state.
“The constitution of the Central Planning Committee under Prof. Terkura Michael Agbir signals the beginning of a coordinated process towards an anniversary that will combine institutional reflection, recognition and renewed commitment to the future,” the statement said.
Management noted that the three-year milestone is not solely about Dr. Hwande, but about BSUTH as an institution, its workforce, patients, trainees, partners and stakeholders whose collective efforts continue to shape its future.
