…Congratulates Iorpev on appointment
Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, has called on governments and security stakeholders to implement the resolutions of the North Central Zonal Security Summit aimed at restoring peace, protecting lives and property, and facilitating the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their ancestral communities.
The union made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting held on Thursday at the NUJ House, Makurdi, and presided over by the State Chairman, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber.
While commending the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, for successfully hosting the North Central Security Summit, the Congress urged the government to intensify efforts towards the safe resettlement of IDPs.
It noted that, as an agrarian state, Benue requires its displaced citizens to return to their ancestral communities to resume farming and other means of livelihood. The Congress also expressed concern over the plight of IDPs at the International Market and called for appropriate measures to address their situation.
On the UNI Agric Road, the Congress called on the contractor handling the project to expedite construction, particularly following the recent loss of two lives on the road. It also urged the contractor to provide clearly visible danger signs, barricades and adequate lighting at construction sites, especially at night, to protect motorists and pedestrians.
The Congress further called on relevant agencies to intensify road safety campaigns and enforcement as the ember months approach. It urged motorists to avoid speeding, overloading, dangerous overtaking, driving under the influence of intoxicating substances and the use of unroadworthy vehicles.
Expressing concern over the rising cases of sexual and genderbased violence, particularly the abuse of children, the Congress called for stronger preventive measures, prompt investigation and prosecution of offenders, as well as appropriate punishment in accordance with the law to serve as a deterrent to others.
On political conduct, the Congress urged politicians across the political divide to embrace fair play, tolerance and issue-based politics. It cautioned against inflammatory statements, personal attacks and other actions capable of creating unnecessary discord and acrimony in the state.
The Congress also congratulated Chief Solomon Iorpev on his appointment as Commissioner for Information and Orientation, describing the appointment as an opportunity to strengthen government media relations and improve effective communication in the state. It pledged the cooperation of the Union towards advancing responsible journalism and development in Benue State.
The Congress further called on relevant authorities to ensure compliance with the approved policy on customised text books without imposing unnecessary financial burdens on parents and families.
