…Says several suspects already in custody
Benue State Government has issued a stern warning against the destruction of public utilities and billboards, vowing to arrest and prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law.
In a statement on Monday, the Hon. Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Solomon Iorpev, said government had commenced the arrest of individuals and groups involved in what it described as “the wanton destruction” of public and private infrastructure across the state.
The government condemned the act as reckless and criminal, noting that it has led to significant losses in public and private investments.
“Anyone found culpable of vandalizing, defacing, or destroying public utilities, billboards, or any other state or private infrastructure will face the full weight of the law,” the statement read. “There will be no sacred cows. No amount of political, social, or personal affiliation will shield any offender from prosecution.”
According to the government, security agencies have been directed to intensify surveillance and to apprehend without delay anyone caught in the act.
“Several suspects have already been arrested and are currently in police custody. They will be arraigned in court shortly to answer for their actions,” it added.
The government described the warning as “final and unequivocal” and urged those with destructive tendencies to desist immediately.
“The Benue State Government will not fold its arms while public and private property is destroyed by irresponsible elements. Anyone caught henceforth will be dealt with decisively and in accordance with the law,” it stated.
The government also called on members of the public to report suspected vandals to the nearest security agency, stressing that protecting public infrastructure is a collective responsibility. It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and public infrastructure across the state.
