The veteran Nollywood actor, late Francis Duru has been described as a responsible father who was devoted to the headship of his family.
His son, Ebuka Duru shared these heartfelt words on Saturday during the candlelight tribute organised in honour of his late father at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK).
He said his father’s most remarkable role was not just on the screen, but also as a devoted family head who was always present as a father.
The late Duru, according to a statement released by the family, passed away on October 23 at the age of 57 after a brief illness.
The candlelight tribute was organised by the Institute of Strategic and Development Communication (ISDEVCOM), where Duru was pursuing his doctoral degree.
Dr. Daniel Chikada, the Acting Director of ISDEVCOM, led a solemn procession from the university entrance into the campus in honor of the late scholar and actor.
In his tribute, Ebuka extolled the virtue of his father which was putting his family first in all endeavours despite his busy schedules and celebrity status.
“His greatest role was not on television. It was being an ever-present father. You were more than an actor, you were a teacher, a protector, and a mentor. It hurts deeply knowing that the voice I grew up listening to is now just a memory, and that the man I looked up to is no longer physically here with us,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor of NSUK, Prof. Sa’adatu Liman, represented by Dr. Amende Charles, Head of the Department of Languages and Linguistics described Duru’s passing as a major loss to the institution.
She noted that Duru brought immense values to the university, positively influencing departments such as Theatre Arts, Mass Communication, and ISDEVCOM.
Dr. Chikada also encouraged students to emulate Duru’s humility and dedication, noting that despite his fame, the veteran actor was always accessible and eager to assist others.
Also, the former Executive Director of ISDEVCOM, Prof. Emmanuel Dandaura, expressed deep sorrow, describing Duru as a brother, confidant, and key contributor to the growth of the institute during its foundational years.
Similarly, Dr. Ephraim Okon, President of the ISDEVCOM Alumni, represented by a Doctoral candidate, Mrs. Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, said Duru was a “celebrity scholar” who remained exceptionally humble, approachable, and always ready to serve as the Resident Master of Ceremonies.
