The Benue State House of Assembly has directed the Ministries of Health and Agriculture to launch public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers of chemical-laced food and promote healthy food choices. The Assembly also urged the ministries to prosecute offenders who use toxic chemicals in food storage.
The directive was made during a plenary session on Tuesday, where Hon. Anyor Matu, representing Kwande East Constituency moved a motion highlighting the risks of toxic chemicals in food storage. Matu noted that many farmers and businesses prioritize profit over people’s health, using chemicals like Potassium Bromate and Sodium Sulphate to extend shelf life
“If the situation is not urgently addressed, it will pose a significant threat to public health.”, he added
Members who supported the motion, including Hon. Elias Audu of Gwer State Constituency, Hon. Matthew Damkor and Hon. Terwase Uche, representing Tiev and Guma State Constituencies respectively, noted that the use of chemicals in food storage poses a significant threat to public health and the economy. They urged immediate attention to address these practices, which can cause death and other health issues.
The Assembly called on relevant authorities to encourage farmers to adopt natural, non-toxic methods for food preservation, such as proper ventilation, refrigeration, and organic pesticides. The Speaker, Hon. Alfred Emberga, directed the Clerk to write to relevant authorities for immediate action.
