Members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Plateau State chapter, on Monday held their state congress in Jos, where new executives were elected for a four-year tenure.
The congress, which was described as peaceful, saw delegates affirm the emergence of Hon. Solomon Ndan Yakubu as state chairman. Yakubu was returned unopposed alongside 33 other executives.
In his acceptance speech after taking the oath of office, Yakubu assured party members of fairness and justice in the administration of the party. He stated that the people of Plateau were seeking alternatives to existing political platforms.
Earlier, the chairman disclosed that the party had witnessed a surge in membership within a short period. According to him, over 250,000 members were registered within three days. He pledged to build the party from the grassroots and expressed confidence that the NDC would take over the Government House in Jos.
Speaking on behalf of the party’s national secretariat, the leader of the delegation, Mr. Sam Odeh, commended the resilience of the Plateau State chapter. He dismissed speculations suggesting that the party was facing litigation challenges.
Odeh urged the newly elected ward, local government, zonal, and state executives to promote the party and adhere to its ideology. He also assured members that the NDC would field candidates for all elective positions, from state assemblies to the presidency.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present at the congress and witnessed the proceedings.
Also speaking, a party leader in Plateau State, Da Jonathan Akuns, called on members to support the party to ensure electoral victory. He emphasized that the NDC would practice inclusive governance regardless of social or economic status.
Akuns expressed optimism about the party’s prospects, stating that the NDC would take over political leadership in the state come 2027. He added that the party was committed to addressing the challenges currently facing citizens.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress is among the newly registered political parties in Nigeria, cleared to participate in the 2027 general elections.
Observers noted that a significant number of NDC members are supporters of the Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso political movements.
