FOR many families in Benue State today, the dream of acquiring tertiary education is increasingly threatened by economic hardship and rising educational costs. This reality calls for urgent government intervention through the revival and strengthening of scholarships and bursary programmes for students of Benue State origin.
FOR decades, scholarship schemes served as a vital source of support for thousands of students of Benue origin studying in various tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The programme provided relief to struggling families, encouraged academic excellence, and offered hope to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Beneficiaries of those schemes have since become professionals in their respective fields and contributors to the development of the state and the nation.
UNFORTUNATELY, the once-popular Benue State Scholarships Scheme has gradually faded from public consciousness. While successive administrations have introduced youth empowerment initiatives and occasional educational interventions, the structured scholarships programme that many students and parents relied upon appears to have been abandoned. As a result, many deserving students are left to bear the burden of financing their education without meaningful government support.
THE economic realities facing families today make the situation even more compelling. Tuition fees in many institutions have increased significantly. The costs of accommodation, transportation, textbooks, internet services, research materials, and other academic necessities continue to rise. These expenses have become overwhelming. Some students are forced to defer their studies, while others struggle to combine academics with low-paying jobs simply to remain in school.
WHEN talented young people are unable to complete their education due to financial challenges, society loses valuable human resources. Investing in education is therefore not merely a social responsibility; it is a strategic economic decision.
AS efforts have been made by the present administration to improve educational infrastructure and enhance learning outcomes, there is need to complement these initiatives with direct support for students through scholarships and bursaries.
SCHOLARSHIPS inspire students to strive for excellence, knowing that their hard work and determination can attract recognition and support.
A revitalized scholarship programme should be designed to meet contemporary realities. Merit-based scholarships can reward outstanding academic performance, while bursaries can assist students from low-income families. Special grants should be introduced for students pursuing professional and technical courses that are critical to the state’s development needs. Students living with disabilities and those from vulnerable communities should also receive targeted support.
ADOPTION of a digital application and verification process would reduce bureaucracy, eliminate favoritism, and ensure that assistance reaches genuine beneficiaries. Public disclosure of successful applicants and periodic publication of disbursement records would further strengthen public trust and confidence in the programme.
GOVERNMENT should explore partnerships with private organizations, development agencies, and successful Benue sons and daughters willing to support educational advancement. A scholarship trust fund, jointly financed by government and stakeholders, could provide a sustainable framework for supporting students over the long term.
THE competition for economic growth and development in the twenty-first century is increasingly driven by knowledge, innovation, and skilled manpower. States that invest in their young people today will reap the benefits tomorrow.
THE future of Benue State depends largely on the quality of education and opportunities available to its young population. Reviving the scholarship and bursary scheme is not an act of charity but a strategic investment in the state’s future prosperity.
BENUE State Government should therefore, revisit and strengthen the scholarship programme that once brought hope to thousands of Benue students to ease the financial burden on families, promote educational attainment, and empower a new generation of leaders equipped to drive the state’s progress.
