Tributes poured in from media professionals, civil servants, and alumni of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, as veteran journalist Terlumun Nyifyan was laid to rest on Friday at his country home in Tse Nyifyan, Juku Mbanev, Mbasuur, Mbatiav, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.
Delivering a funeral oration on behalf of the Benue Printing and Publishing Corporation, the Assistant General Manager, Operations, Akpera Nase, who represented the Acting General Manager, Iorvaa Atachin, described the late Nyifyan as a dedicated and humane colleague.
“He was a man who was dedicated to his duties and related well with colleagues, both senior and junior. He was calm and humane,” Atachin said
Tracing his career, he noted that Nyifyan began his journalism journey with The Voice newspaper in 1992 and rose to the pinnacle of the profession as an Editor.
“We miss him. He was a bridge builder. He did not joke with work. He was a very simple person. His ‘yes’ was yes and his ‘no’ was no,” he added.
Also addressing mourners, Dr. James Iorpuu, Executive Secretary and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Benue State and Dr. Thomas Tobi, who represented Cohort 49 of NIPSS described the deceased as a diligent and amiable professional.
“Nyifyan was a good man who was diligent in his duties. He related well with his colleagues,” they said. They recalled that the late journalist was an alumnus of NIPSS and was remembered as a patient and kind man.
Other NIPSS alumni present to pay their last respects included Martha Danjuma and Christabel Iyanya, General Manager of Joy FM.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, who was represented by the Chapel Secretary of The Voice, Sunday Iduh described the late Nyifyan as a model professional. Comrade Ugber said the late journalist devoted himself to journalism, civil service, and union development with integrity and exceptional passion.
“His contributions left an enduring legacy in the media industry and inspired generations of journalists in Benue State and beyond,” he stated.
According to him, beyond his professional accomplishments, Nyifyan was remembered for his humility, wisdom, mentorship of younger colleagues, and his unshakable belief in truth and justice.
Nyifyan’s death has been described as a great loss to the media community in Benue and to the journalism profession at large.
