The Benue State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion around the busy Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi following the commencement of construction works on the Wurukum Flyover Bridge.
In a statement issued by the Government House Administration on Tuesday, the state government disclosed that the contractor handling the project, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) Nigeria Limited, has begun execution of the flyover project. It states that, as part of the initial works, an old and distressed three-cell box culvert located beside Shafa Filling Station will be demolished.
According to the statement, the demolition exercise is scheduled to begin on Thursday, January 8, 2026, and is expected to last for four weeks. During this period, the Makurdi–Aliade approach of the Wurukum Roundabout along the New Otukpo Road will be closed to traffic.
The government explained that the culvert is no longer adequate to support current traffic demands, making its removal necessary for the successful construction of the flyover.
“To reduce traffic congestion and inconvenience to motorists, alternative routes have been provided. Road users traveling from Aliade to Lafia or Gboko are advised to divert at Apir Market Junction through Yaikyo Market Junction, George Akume Way at Balcony–Terwase Agbadu, link Gboko Road, and return to Wurukum–Lafia.
“Motorists coming from Lafia and heading toward Aliade are advised to pass through Wurukum Roundabout, Gboko Road, Terwase Agbadu, and George Akume Way via Yaikyo Road or Apir Road. Alternatively, drivers may use the One Way or Iorchia Ayu–Detex Roundabout (Mr Biggs), Underpass, Ishaya Bakut, and New Otukpo Road.”
The statement, signed by Engr. M. S. Amile for the Permanent Secretary, appealed to residents and motorists to remain patient and cooperate with traffic officials during the period of construction.
The Wurukum Flyover project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve road safety in Makurdi once completed.
