The Benue State Police Command has directed the immediate removal of all illegal checkpoints, roadblocks, and unauthorised revenue collection points across the state.
A statement released on Friday, by DSP Udeme Edet, Police Public Relations Officer, quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus C. N. Nwadiogbu, as saying the directive covers all roads, with emphasis on major federal highways such as Makurdi-Lafia, Makurdi-Gboko, Ugbema-Vandeikya, Gboko-Aliade, and Otukpo-Otukpa.
According to the Command, the measure is aimed at improving public safety, ensuring free flow of traffic, and curbing harassment, extortion, and other abuses commuters face on Benue roads.
It further said CP Nwadiogbu has mandated all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Unit Commanders to enforce strict compliance within their jurisdictions as well as stressed that only security checkpoints duly approved by relevant authorities and manned by recognised security personnel with proper identification will be allowed to operate.
The Commissioner also urged residents to report any instance of extortion, harassment, or suspicious checkpoints to the nearest police station, security formation, or appropriate government agency for immediate action.
The CP warned that anyone found erecting or operating illegal checkpoints or collecting revenue without authorisation will face “decisive disciplinary and legal action” under existing laws.
While calling on the public to remain vigilant and support security efforts by reporting suspicious persons, vehicles, or movements, The Command
reassured Benue residents and road users that the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains committed to protecting lives and property in the state.
