Renowned Benue singer, songwriter, dancer, choreographer, fitness instructor, beauty queen manager, comedian, and internationally acclaimed Swange dancer, Dooshima Anita Udouje, popularly known as Anita Doosh, spoke about her journey, challenges, achievements, and aspirations in an interview with Terese Tse of The Voice Entertainment and Society.

How did your musical journey begin, and how did you build an audience beyond Nigeria?
Anita Doosh: My journey in entertainment began as a cultural dancer. I trained with Papa Rosco Agabo Cultural Troupe, Sigwa Cultural Troupe, owned by Simon Ikya, and later worked with Afri Theatre Troupe, where I backed and performed alongside several established musicians.
Over the years, I shared stages with renowned artists such as David Abex, the late Philon Brown, Fidel Shamel, Yesta T&T, Bravo Dee the Pachanga King, Zaki Azzey, Zule Zuu, 2Face Idibia, Romeo 14, Theres Vee, and the Police Band. Those experiences taught me discipline, professionalism, and the beauty of entertainment.
A major turning point came in 2013 when I emerged as one of four dancers selected from over 100 contestants to represent Benue State at an international event in Abuja before 54 world presidents. Following that performance, I was employed by the Benue State Council for Arts and Culture, where I still serve today.
After completing my NYSC in 2018, I encountered a setback when I was considered unsuitable for stage performances because of my body size. Rather than allow that experience to discourage me, I channelled my passion into music.
One of the people who greatly influenced my development was Bigboi the Music Mechanic, who mentored me and helped me understand the technical aspects of music production. Today, I proudly write, record, and release my own songs.
Building an audience was not easy. I attended events where I was not invited, hoping for an opportunity to perform. Sometimes I was given a chance, and sometimes I was turned away. I also performed free of charge at bars, weddings, birthdays, and community events simply to showcase my talent.
Today, I thank God that my consistency has paid off. I have gained recognition across Benue State, receive regular bookings, and was honoured with a brand-new car by the former First Lady of Benue State, Her Excellency Chief (Mrs.) Eunice Ortom. My story proves that passion, perseverance, patience, and faith can turn dreams into reality.
Your profile includes many roles; from philosopher and civil servant to dancer, musician, comedian, and beauty queen manager. How did you build such a diverse career?
Anita Doosh: My career reflects years of passion, continuous learning, and God’s grace. My educational background in Philosophy and Theatre Arts strengthened my creativity and confidence, while my work as a civil servant gave me stability.
Every role I have embraced; whether as a songwriter, choreographer, fitness instructor, comedian, or pageant manager; represents a different stage of my journey. I believe in developing every talent God has given me and using them to positively impact society.
What messages do your songs convey, and who are they meant for?
Anita Doosh: My songs focus on love, hope, perseverance, life’s realities, and the everyday experiences of ordinary people. Through my music, I celebrate our culture, tell relatable stories, and encourage people never to give up despite life’s challenges.
My audience is everyone who appreciates meaningful music, regardless of age or background.
You have performed in Ethiopia, the United States, and Malaysia. How did those opportunities come about?
Anita Doosh: Those opportunities came through years of dedication, cultural performances, and networking. Working with Tar Ukoh and the Benue State Council for Arts and Culture enabled me to represent Benue and Nigeria at several international cultural events. Each trip allowed me to showcase our rich cultural heritage while learning from other cultures around the world.
Where can people listen to your music?
Anita Doosh: Most people discover my music through social media and my live performances. Although I have faced challenges in distributing all my songs on major streaming platforms, I remain optimistic. Currently, some of my songs are available on Audiomack, YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok, where fans can listen and support my work.
Recently, an image circulated showing you sharing drinks with Governor Hyacinth Alia and SGF Senator George Akume. What really happened?
Anita Doosh: I would like to clarify that the image was AI-generated. It was not taken during an actual meeting. I created it as a symbolic expression of my admiration for both leaders and my hope that they continue to work together in unity for the peace, progress, and development of Benue State.
What childhood memories continue to inspire you?
Anita Doosh: My years at Idu Memorial Secondary School in Okpokwu Local Government Area remain some of my happiest memories. I actively participated in cultural activities and dancing, which helped me discover my passion for entertainment.
Those formative years nurtured my confidence, creativity, and love for Benue culture.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Anita Doosh: I hope to reach even wider audiences, release more impactful music, and have my catalogue available on all major streaming platforms.
Beyond music, I want to continue promoting Benue culture, mentor emerging talents, and leave a lasting legacy through my creative work.
“Or ka nan fau ga” remains one of your most popular songs. What inspired it?
Anita Doosh: The song was inspired by both my personal experiences and the experiences of people around me. It reflects disappointment, resilience, hope, and self-reflection. I believe many listeners connect with it because it speaks to challenges that countless people have experienced.
As a woman in a male-dominated industry, what challenges have you faced?
Anita Doosh: Like many women in entertainment, I have had to work much harder to earn recognition and respect. There have been occasions when people focused more on my appearance than my talent, and times when my contributions were overlooked.
These experiences motivated me to establish a platform for female entertainers in Benue State, a space where women can showcase their talents, support one another, and grow professionally. My greatest challenge now is securing sponsorship to make this vision a reality. I hope my journey inspires young women to believe in themselves, remain focused, and never allow obstacles to silence their dreams.
Celebrity marriages often attract public attention. Has your experience been different?
Anita Doosh: Every marriage has its challenges, whether public or private. What has sustained ours is commitment, mutual respect, patience, honest communication, and faith. We choose to resolve our challenges privately rather than allowing public opinion to define our relationship. We remain focused on building a strong and peaceful home.
What are you doing to encourage more young women to join the entertainment industry?
Anita Doosh: I believe the best encouragement is to lead by example. I mentor young women whenever I have the opportunity, encouraging them to remain disciplined, professional, and committed to their dreams.
I want them to know that success is possible through hard work, integrity, and perseverance. My goal is to help create opportunities for more women to thrive while staying true to their values.
