offices, student accommodation, water supply, electricity and recreational facilities. ICT infrastructure is also being strengthened to support modern teaching, learning and administration.
“A contract has been awarded for the purchase and distribution of 63 laptops and 92 desktop computers to Deans and Heads of Department to improve the processing of examinations and results. Work is also ongoing to deploy a new and more reliable university portal to enhance registration, admissions, fee payments and results managemen”
In the area of academic development, he said the 2025/2026 admission exercise was concluded with the matriculation of 9,541 undergraduates on 22nd April 2026 while the Postgraduate School also conducted its orientation and 14th Lecture Series on 24th April 2026.
“First semester examinations for undergraduates held from 27th April to 19th May 2026, while postgraduate examinations were conducted from 3rd to 8th August 2026. All outstanding results for the 2024/2025 session have been cleared and approved by Senate. Registration for Post-UTME and Direct Entry screening for the 2026/2027 academic session ran from 13th July to 12th August 2026”
He equally disclosed that significant progress was also recorded in accreditation and professional training. “Seven academic programmes underwent NUC accreditation in October and November 2025. Five of them: B.Sc. Statistics, Medical Laboratory Science, Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, secured full accreditation for five years, while B.Sc. Radiography and Radiation Science, and Political Science received interim accreditation for two years.
“On 21st May 2026, the first set of 57 Bachelor of Nursing Science graduands were inducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, marking a major milestone for the programme. On 30th June 2026, the 12th set of Medical Doctors were inducted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria
“To strengthen manpower in critical areas, Council approved the recruitment of essential academic staff for the College of Health Sciences to meet regulatory requirements”
Professor Alabama explained that leadership structures were also reinforced with the appointment of Professor Euginia Member-Genyi as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration and Professor Innocent Otache Ogwuche as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic while Professor Nancy Ngunan Ugbagir was appointed Acting University Librarian with effect from 4th April 2026 to ensure continuity in the library.
“In research and partnerships, the Centre for Research Management secured TETFund approvals for several research activities, including sponsorship for 41 academic staff. The university also obtained participation in the NUC Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises, iDICE, programme. The programme is designed to equip students and staff with digital skills, entrepreneurship training and innovation support through a proposed Digital and Creative Enterprise Centre. The university continues to serve as a State Collation Centre for JUPEB examinations, a role that expands access to university education and contributes to internally generated revenue
“The university also complied promptly with data demands from the National Universities Commission, including submission of the outstanding 2023 statistical digest and 2025 enrolment and staff data. A committee has been constituted to develop a mentor-mentee policy aimed at retaining institutional knowledge and enhancing staff development”
