Gov Sule commissions 5.2km Akwanga bypass

… reaffirms commitment to infrastructure

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has  commissioned the newly completed 5.2-kilometre Akwanga-Jos bypass road .

Also commissioned is the 1-kilometre township road constructed in Akwanga Local Government Area.

He said the initiative is part of his administration’s broader strategy to modernise urban infrastructure, enhance traffic safety, and stimulate economic expansion across the region.

Speaking on Saturday during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Sule said that the state government decided to upgrade the road’s initial design to full federal highway with an additional cost of under N1 billion.

The governor said his administration opted for a durable, heavy-duty build to sustain high traffic volumes, with plans to add a strategic roundabout and solar streetlights.

The governor expressed deep personal satisfaction in seeing his vision materialise into concrete development for the state.

“Satisfying actually to start to make a promise and fulfilling and when you have a dream of bringing progress and God gives you the opportunity to see that progress materialise, it’s always a very happy moment,” he said.

Governor Sule however rejected calls by local leaders and the Nasarawa Geographic Information System to name the project after himself.

“I cannot construct something as a Governor using public resources and name it after myself. No, I think that is not proper”, he explained.

He consequently named the route the Damishi Luka Bypass in memory of the late former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State.

The governor paid tributes to Luka’s dedicated service as a state lawmaker and executive council member, sharing a personal memory of Luka’s steadfast political commitment while in the private sector.

Governor Sule reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to driving equitable infrastructure development.

He stated that road construction and rehabilitation initiatives will continue seamlessly across all 13 local government areas in the State.

The event also featured the commissioning of the 1-kilometre Rev. Waya Avenue/Ezekiel Maichibi Street township road, executed by Akwanga LGA Chairman, Hon. Safiyanu Isa Andaha.

Also speaking, the Akwanga LGA chairman, Hon. Andaha commended Governor Sule for granting financial autonomy to local governments, which enabled them to execute essential grassroots development projects.

The Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Hon. Yakubu Kwanta, noted that the corridor will drive commercial expansion and new residential settlements, while the traditional ruler of the area, the Chun Mada, Mr. Samson Gamu-Yare, highlighted its safety impact.

“Our town is a gateway to the North-East and Plateau. This bypass will save lives and bring more development closer to our people. We are grateful,” Gamu-Yare said.

The commissioning ceremony drew prominent figures from across the state’s political and traditional landscape. Key attendees included Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, Senator Danladi Halilu-Envuluanza, members of the State Executive Council, All Progressives Congress leaders, and local community residents.
