Benue state government has reinstated commitment towards institutional reforms, fiscal responsibility and grassroots development to redefine governance in the state.
Secretary to the State Government, SSG Barrister Serumun Deborah Aber stated this Wednesday while declaring open a three day workshop organised by the Local Government Service Commission in conjunction with M and P Corporate Services Limited holding at the conference hall of RAAMP, Makurdi.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet office, Mr Godwin Tighil, Barrister Aber said the demands for governance at the grassroots ranging from primary Healthcare and basic education to rural infrastructure, environmental sanitation and local economic development required innovative financing strategies, strict adherence to fiscal discipline and a solid understanding of the enabling tax laws.
She said, building a financially sustainable local government was central to the vision of Governor Hyacinth Alia saying, the administration would continue to support initiatives that promotes capacity building, accountability and efficiency within the local government system.
Also speaking, Chairman, Local Government Service Commission Mr James Ivever, represented by permanent commissioner three at the commission Mr Humbe Mkena said, part three of the Nigerian Tax Act Two Thousand and Twenty Five which addresses tax administration and compliance, places significant responsibility on revenue authorities to ensure professionalism, fairness and due process in tax collection.
Mr Ivever explained that due to persistant funding challenges and weak revenue frameworks, the Nigerian tax act two thousand and twenty five particularly as provided under section one of and part one established a unified and modern tax administration framework aimed at strengthening efficiency noting that the act presented a renewed opportunity to lawfully expanded revenue sources and enhance fiscal sustainability.
In a remark, Chairman, Benue State Civil Service Commission, Mr Williams Itodo charged participants to pay diligent attention during the training as the workshop would equip them with all it take to effectively implement the Nigerian tax act two thousand and twenty five at the local government level.
The three day workshop with the theme ” understanding the Nigerian Tax Act two thousand and twenty five, funding strategies and financial sustainability for local government councils in Benue” drew partnerships across the twenty three local governments of the state.
