… As Council Chairman empowers residents
The Buruku Traditional Council has announced its decision to prohibit the sale of all types of alcoholic beverages during wake ceremonies and burial rites.
This resolution was disclosed at the Buruku Chairman’s Guest House by the Ter Buruku, Chief Moses Hanior, during the distribution of motorcycles, fertiliser, and solar lights to kindred heads, farmers, and councillors across the 13 council wards of Buruku Local Government Area on Tuesday. The event was organized by the Council Chairman, Hon. Raymond Zege.
According to the Ter Buruku, most wake ceremonies and burials are intended to be solemn occasions; however, the consumption of alcohol has frequently rendered them disorderly. Hence, the ban aims to restore the dignity and solemnity of these events.
“We have observed that wake and burial ceremonies are meant to be moments of mourning, comfort for the bereaved, and prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased. Unfortunately, these occasions often devolve into disruptions, excessive celebrations, and various forms of misconduct, primarily due to the consumption of alcohol. Therefore, we have resolved to prohibit the sale of alcoholic drinks at these events,” he stated.
Chief Moses Hanior further noted that measures are being taken to constitute a task force dedicated to enforcing the ban, emphasizing that violators will be subject to sanctions.
“We are collaborating with all relevant stakeholders within Buruku Local Government Area to form a formidable task force to ensure that this ban is not merely announced but is effectively implemented,” he stressed.
The Second-Class Chief also urged the illustrious sons and daughters of Buruku extraction to prioritize the interests of their local government, foster unity, and cultivate love among one another to promote growth and development. He cautioned against engaging in divisive politics.
The Executive Chairman of Buruku Local Government Council, Hon. Raymond Zege, stressed that his ongoing empowerment schemes are intended to complement the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Governor Hyacinth Alia’s Divine Mandate to benefit grassroots citizens.
Expressing concern about the rising incidence of human trafficking across the state and particularly within Buruku, Hon. Zege called on parents and guardians to be vigilant in safeguarding their children, underscoring that protecting minors is a constitutional duty.
He sternly warned residents of Buruku to desist from all forms of slavery, especially human trafficking, asserting that offenders will face the full weight of the law regardless of their relationship to the victims. Additionally, he appealed for continuous prayers for President Tinubu, Governor Alia, and himself to enable them to perform their duties effectively.
