The Plateau State Ministry of Transport Services has organized a one-day mandatory in-house training for its staff, with particular focus on newly employed civil servants.
Addressing participants on Friday at the State Secretariat in Jos, the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Jatau Davou, urged staff members to be willing to learn and embrace continuous capacity building.
Hon. Davou charged both old and new employees of the ministry to acquire modern digital skills in service delivery, stressing that the world has gone digital and every civil servant must adapt to remain relevant. He specifically encouraged staff who are not computer literate to develop the necessary skills.
The Commissioner also challenged staff to embrace innovation aimed at transforming the ministry into a modern and efficient institution that can be reckoned with.
Speaking with journalists, Hon. Davou disclosed that the training would be conducted annually to improve skills and enhance staff development. He added that the next phase of the training would focus on the Department of Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs), noting that this would help bring sanity to the transport sector.
He further appreciated Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, for increasing the fleet of metro buses in the state, revealing that additional routes would soon be opened to enable residents to enjoy smoother transportation services.
According to him, plans are also underway to improve all forms of transportation, including waterways.
One of the facilitators, Mrs. Simi Chollom, who delivered a lecture on Work Ethics and Etiquette, urged participants to avoid corrupt practices, shun partisanship and nepotism, maintain confidentiality, and strictly adhere to the ethics of the civil service at all times.
Other topics covered during the training included Public Service and Civil Service Rules, Financial Regulations, Mental Health, an Overview of the Procurement Law, as well as Public Relations and Publicity.
Reacting separately to the training, Mrs. Ayisa Fwangkeal and Mr. Mangut Emmanuel said the programme would help them carry out their duties more efficiently and without hitches. They expressed appreciation to the government for the opportunity to serve the state.
The resource persons for the training were drawn from experienced and highly skilled senior civil servants, who were tasked with imparting knowledge and practical insights to the new staff.
