Following renewed attacks and killings of residents in Jos city centre, the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has directed security agencies to fully enforce the ban on the operation of commercial motorcycle, popularly known as “okada”. It has been observed that most attackers have been using motorcycles to carry out these deadly attacks.
Governor Mutfwang made this known on Tuesday in a statewide broadcast to citizens as part of measures to forestall possible future attacks and to calm residents following the Angwa Rukuba shooting. The governor noted that the decision to ban commercial motorcycle was reached during an emergency State Security Council meeting held on Monday evening.
“In furtherance of our commitment to strengthening security, we have convened a State Security Council meeting to review and reinforce our security architecture, ensuring it becomes more proactive and responsive to emerging threats. Consequently, I direct security agencies to strictly enforce the law banning commercial motorcycle operators (okada) within the Jos Greater Master Plan. The Commissioner of Police will issue detailed guidelines in this regard,” he said.
Governor Mutfwang, during the broadcast, also condoled with those who lost loved ones. “On behalf of the Deputy Governor, the State Executive Council, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest condolences to all affected families. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We also pray for the swift and full recovery of the injured,” he said.
He stressed that the Angwa Rukuba mayhem serves as an eye-opener for further strategies to curb banditry. “This tragic incident serves as a solemn reminder of the need for unity, vigilance, and collective responsibility. Let me reiterate the unwavering commitment of this administration to protecting lives and property and ensuring lasting peace across Plateau State,” he added.
Recall that 28 persons were shot dead during the Sunday night attack by suspected bandits in the Angwa Rukuba community, while three others who were badly injured have been hospitalized. The government has pledged to foot the medical bills of the injured.
