Young Stars Football Club of Gboko has won the 10th edition of Chief Sebastine Hon (SAN) Unity Cup Competition, defeating their opponent, Charity Football Club, on penalty shootout with a 3-2 goal aggregate.
The finals, which started at 4:15 pm on Monday at the JS Tarka stadium, Gboko amidst a mammoth crowd, produced a barren first-half draw despite tactical displays and strenuous efforts made by both teams to find the back of the net. The second half resumed after a short break with high energy and defensive displays, especially as both finalists had reinforced their teams with substitutes. Yet, none was able to play past the opponent’s goal-line, even though Young Stars FC missed a golden chance at 65 minutes that would have opened the scoresheet for the match if properly utilised.
After 90 minutes of fruitless attempts, the winner was decided through a penalty shootout. That was when Charity FC fell below the pecking order, though claiming the First Runner-up spot, while Cobra FC Yandev won the second runner-up (Third place) position, respectively.
Meanwhile, Peter Igabu of Charity FC pocketed the Best Defender of the tournament prize, while Elijah of Fidei Poly FC was crowned the Highest Goals Scorer of the tournament with 10 goals. Aondohemba Ortserga won the Most Valuable Player of the tournament award. The Best Coach and Best Goalie of the tournament awards went to Moses Ahenekaa and the 52-year-old Douglas Humbe, respectively. Maxwell Ngutor was honoured for sponsoring Man of the Match awards for the 52 matches of the just-concluded tournament.
Similarly, Flight FC Gboko equally won the Dr. Jeffrey Kuraun Unity Cup yesterday at the same venue against their top opponent, Fidei Poly FC.
