The former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has officially resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adamu resigned membership of the party for what he characterised as “a severe absence of transparency, fairness, and internal democracy” during the party’s recent governorship primary election in Nasarawa State.
He delivered his resignation letter to the APC ward executives in Makama Ward, located in Lafia on Monday.
According to the former police boss, the tipping point was the execution of the gubernatorial primary, which he argued failed to offer an equal opportunity to all competing aspirants.
”This was a difficult choice to make. But recent actions within the party, particularly how the Nasarawa State governorship primary was handled, mean I can no longer participate in politics under the APC banner”, he said.
The governorship aspirant stated that any true democratic party must uphold the values of equity, openness, and equal treatment for its members and candidates.
In his view, the selection process for the APC’s governorship flagbearer in Nasarawa completely abandoned these standards, ultimately shattering his trust in the party’s hierarchy.
”I firmly believe that a democratic political party must be run on the pillars of internal democracy, equity, transparency, and equal access. Regrettably, the primary election ignored these principles, destroying my confidence in the state’s party leadership and its internal mechanisms”, he said.
Adamu revealed that his departure followed extensive discussions with his family, political allies, and loyal supporters. Moving forward, the aspirant hinted, he intends to pursue his political goals through an alternative political party.
Despite his grievances, the ex-IGP expressed gratitude to the APC members at the ward, local government, and state levels for their camaraderie and support throughout his tenure with the party.
