The Plateau State Police Command has arrested several suspects in connection with various criminal offences and recovered arms and ammunition as part of ongoing efforts to tackle crime and criminality in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyi, reiterated the command’s resolve to intensify the fight against crime while assuring residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
CP Faniyi gave the assurance on Friday in Jos, at the command headquarters, during the parade of suspects arrested in August through intelligence-led operations.
According to the police commissioner, the suspects were arrested for various offences, including culpable homicide, kidnapping, armed robbery, theft, human trafficking, drug abuse, defilement and illegal possession of arms and ammunition.
The arrests and recoveries recorded during the period included two suspects for culpable homicide, one for kidnapping, five suspects linked to foiled kidnapping attempts, five suspects in connection with arms recovery, two suspects for human trafficking, two for drug abuse, two for armed robbery and five for theft.
The command also recovered ammunition in connection with six suspects and arrested two suspects for alleged defilement.
The commissioner further disclosed that among those arrested was a 35-year-old man alleged to have defiled a minor.
CP Faniyi attributed the achievements to intelligence gathering and the cooperation of members of the public, community leaders and other stakeholders.
“The achievements we are presenting today are not merely statistics or isolated operational successes. They represent the collective efforts of our officers and men, as well as the cooperation of community leaders, stakeholders and, importantly, the confidence and timely information provided by members of the public,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Olukayode Egbetokun, presented cheques totaling N25 million to the next-of-kin of 22 deceased police officers who died in the line of duty.
The cheques were presented to the families of the fallen officers as part of the Nigeria Police Force’s welfare support for personnel who lost their lives in the course of serving the nation.
CP Faniyi said the prompt presentation of the cheques demonstrated the Inspector-General of Police’s commitment to the welfare of members of the force, including serving, retired and deceased personnel.
He urged the families of the deceased officers to take solace in the fact that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to recognise and support them even after the death of their loved ones.
The commissioner had earlier told journalists that all the suspects arrested would be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
He also commended journalists for their effective coverage and reporting of the activities of the police command, urging them to report any unprofessional conduct or alleged misconduct by police personnel directly to his office.
