Forum of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates for the forthcoming local government elections in Plateau State has accused the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) of deliberately failing to commence preparations for the conduct of elections into the 17 local government areas of the state. PLASIEC is the statutory body responsible for conducting local government elections in Plateau State.
The leader of the forum, Hon. Sylvanus Dashe Datong, made the allegation on Wednesday during a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council Secretariat in Jos.
Datong called on the Plateau State Government to provide PLASIEC with all necessary lawful support to enable the commission conduct free, fair and credible local government elections within the next nine days.
He warned that failure to conduct the elections before the expiration of the tenure of the current local government chairmen and councillors could create a vacuum in the local government administration of the state.
“The Plateau State Government must, as a matter of urgent public importance, provide all lawful necessary support to PLASIEC to enable the commission conduct free, fair and credible local government elections within nine days from today, to avoid being complicit should a vacuum be created in the local government structures of Plateau State as a result of the failure or inability of PLASIEC to discharge its lawful mandate before October 10, 2026,” he said.
The PDP aspirants also urged PLASIEC to make deliberate and concerted efforts to conduct the elections within the stipulated period, warning that any further delay could plunge the state into a constitutional and democratic crisis.
