Ademola Lookman’s decisive goal sealed a dramatic 3-2 aggregate victory for Atlético Madrid over Barcelona on Wednesday night, booking the Spanish side’s place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time since the 2016/17 season.
In a pulsating quarter-final second leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium, Atlético overturned an early deficit to edge past their La Liga rivals in a contest that swung from end to end.
Barcelona started strongly, seizing control inside the opening 30 minutes. Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in the 4th minute before Ferran Torres doubled the visitors’ lead in the 25th, as Barça pressed high and stretched Diego Simeone’s defence — a rare sight against an Atlético side renowned for its resilience.
Atlético, however, found their lifeline through Lookman. In the 31st minute, the Nigerian international timed his run to perfection and finished calmly from a Marcos Llorente delivery to reignite belief inside the stadium. The goal proved decisive across the two legs, giving Simeone’s men the advantage they would not relinquish.
Simeone responded with tactical substitutions in the second half to protect the aggregate lead and manage the game. Barcelona’s task grew steeper when Eric García was sent off following a VAR review for denying Alexander Sørloth a clear goalscoring opportunity. Yet the Catalans continued to push forward in search of a comeback, only to be met by a disciplined and resolute Atlético rearguard.
Lookman’s impact extended beyond the goal. The forward was a constant threat down the right flank, using his pace and direct running to stretch Barcelona’s defence while tracking back diligently to help contain Yamal.
Having arrived at Atlético in the winter transfer window, Lookman has quickly become influential on the biggest stage. In six Champions League appearances for the club, he has now recorded two goals and two assists. Across all competitions this season for Atalanta and Atlético combined, the Nigerian has been directly involved in 15 goals in 36 appearances, with nine goals and six assists.
The 3-2 aggregate win ends Atlético’s seven-year wait for a Champions League semi-final berth and underscores Lookman’s growing importance to Simeone’s side.
