Teachers’ Day 2026: Benue Teachers celebrate 60 years, highlight education gains

…As NUT endorse Gov Alia’s 2nd term bid 

Teachers across Benue State have joined their colleagues around the world to celebrate the 2026 International Teachers’ Day, highlighting recent investments in basic education, teachers’ welfare and professional development in the state.

The celebration, organised by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Benue State Wing, on Monday at the IBB Square, Makurdi, was held under the theme, “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status and Shaping Our Futures.”

The event also featured the endorsement of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for a second term by the NUT, in recognition of his administration’s interventions in the education sector.

In his keynote address, Governor Alia, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Sam Ode,  said his administration had recruited more than 9,000 teachers, constructed and renovated 435 classrooms, and provided WASH facilities, 36 libraries, 25 school boreholes and more than 13,000 pieces of furniture.

He also highlighted the professional development of over 8,900 teachers, the ₦150 million monthly School Grant Scheme and the implementation of Project BRACE-UP to support the enrolment of out-of-school children.

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion and Executive Chairman of Benue SUBEB, Dr. Grace Adagba, commended the government for policies aimed at improving teachers’ welfare and professional standing, including the School Grant Scheme and harmonised retirement age.

Adagba described teachers as critical partners in building Benue’s future, noting that they had remained resilient and committed despite the challenges facing the profession.

The NUT State Chairman, Comrade Akuma Levi, also acknowledged the administration’s interventions in basic education and teachers’ welfare, saying they had strengthened teachers’ confidence in the government.

He subsequently announced the union’s endorsement of Governor Alia for a second term and urged the administration to sustain its efforts in transforming the education sector.

The celebration brought together teachers, education stakeholders and government officials to mark the 60th anniversary of the NUT and recognise the contribution of teachers to the development of education in Benue State.
