The Benue State Government has taken steps to address the weigh-in allowance and other challenges hindering motivation and growth in state-owned media houses.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Solomon Iorpev, gave this assurance on Tuesday while addressing the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Information Chapel. He described the situation as unfortunate and promised to engage relevant authorities to resolve the concerns.
The Commissioner appreciated the Chapel for its words of encouragement and pledge of support. He noted that the media plays a vital, contributory role in adding value to government institutions. He assured that as journalists advocate for their rights and carry out their responsibilities, the union will not be victimized. He described the Governor as a listening leader and a man of his word, adding that what is needed now is continued reminders and advocacy.
He frowned at the selective payment of weigh-in allowance, where some benefit while others are excluded. “That is not right. What is good for the goose is good for the gander,” he said.
On the directorate cadre, he stated that because the media is the Fourth Estate of the Realm, a directorate system is essential. He explained that information must emanate from a credible source backed by strong government policies and programs. To achieve this, Information Officers/PROs must attain directorate status. He stressed that the Governor is intentional about leadership and that media concerns are a priority. While journalist welfare is paramount to him, he called for guidance, noting that his motto is to work.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Information Chapel, Comrade Ephraim Hemban, presented a list of concerns including: payment of weigh-in allowance for Information Officers, creation of a directorate system, renaming of Information Officers, affiliation with NIPR, and revival of activities in the Ministry.
In a related development, the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, led by Dr. Philip Tordue, paid a solidarity visit to the Commissioner. They sought collaboration in strategic communication, state branding, capacity building, crisis and risk communication, media relations, and public enlightenment. They also requested government support to showcase Benue State’s rich cultural and tourism potential at the World Public Relations Forum scheduled for November 15–21, 2026, in Abuja.
Also on a courtesy visit, the Iber-Gaav class of Konshisha LGA, led by Pastor K.K. Ajai, visited the Commissioner, their kinsman, to identify with him on his new appointment and prayed for God’s guidance in his assignment.
